Day thirty five

On the road again! Just fifteen miles today, and my knees sadly hurt more than I hoped they would. I’m looking to start upping my mileage, especially with these hot sections coming up. I’ll probably change my sleep schedule to wake up significantly earlier, take much longer siestas, and hike into the night. Night hiking is particularly popular for the LA aqueduct, which is coming up in just a few days!

One thing that’s starting to really get on my nerves is the way that shade isn’t as restful as it should be because it’s always teeming with bugs. Everything from flies to little baby gnats swarm around me every time I get to a decently shady spot under some oaks, making it practically impossible to stay put and rest. Despite my best efforts, they consistently succeed at flying into my mouth. I can’t imaging it’s a fun experience for them, since they’ve got at least a 30% of being swallowed once they get in there, but they seem determined to try nonetheless. Fortunately I found a little standalone bush that worked perfectly as a spot for a siesta, enough shade for me but not quite consistent or big enough shade to host a bug society. I suspect when I get to the real desert here shortly I’ll be willing to trade inhaling a good number of bugs just to get a little real shade.
