Today sadly wasn’t as easy as I hoped. Terrain-wise, it was, but I’m still feeling the elevation. Turns out even if my breathing isn’t labored, I still need breaks – who’da thunk! Only instead of my legs protesting, which is my usual signal, today it was my whole body feeling off.
It typically takes 8ish miles to get that feeling, and it’s 7.5 to the top of Whitney. But I’m sure I’m going to want a break halfway up, so I should be just fine! I’m planning it all out today, what to bring as I do an out-and-back. I’m leaving my tent and some of my other gear in camp so I don’t have to carry it.
Im also still seriously considering trying to get there at sunrise. It’ll mean getting up at around 12:30am and doing all my hiking in the dark, and I’ve only night hiked the once, in flat desert. The terrain here has been moderately technically challenging and I’ll be working pretty hard getting up 3000 more feet. But I bet that nap when I get back is gonna be an all-timer.
